This is a very sympathetic letter about the misbehavior of General Devereux's son. Lee says he is reluctant to make this report but he is doing so " ... on the principle which I prefer in my own case, to know the worst that I may have the opportunity of doing what I can to remedy it ..."

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
